1:41 am - stars and stripes

(c) 2003 jane chen

here's a ridiculously patriotic double exposure. i'm not sure i appreciate the aesthetic merits of this one but my photo teacher really liked it.

7:28 pm - softly

(c) 2003 jane chen

Here's another non-obvious double exposure. it's the reflection off a car hood super-imposed on the shadow of a tree against the wall. see it? today was my last photography class. all in all it was fun and i learned quite a bit. if it weren't for the 12-week commitment, i'd be tempted to sign up for the next class. i really liked that it gave me deadlines and forced me to take pictures every week. i just got my lubitel from ebay so that should inspire me to shoot for the near future.

(c) 2003 jane chen

here's a more obvious double exposure: cars at night in front of bloomingdales super-imposed on what looks like the remains of a pier on the hudson river (westside, just above tribeca).

11:42 pm - serendipity

(c) 2003 jane chen

my bad. it's been a while since i've posted. mostly because i ran out of pics to post and was too lazy to scan more in. well, i scanned a few more today so there will be b&ws for the near future. this is the first of a series of double exposures. i ran the film through my nikon f3 once and rewound and then ran the same roll through again. had no idea what images i was double exposing so all of these are serendipitous. this image is not so obvious a double exposure as some of the ones to follow.

10:49 am - central park

(c) 2001 jane chen

one thing i will miss about moving to brooklyn is being just a few blocks away from central park. i will be moving very close to prospect park but somehow it's not quite the same. this was taken in central park - somewhere. that's the thing. i've taken many neat shots of the park while completely lost so i've never been in the same place twice. i don't think.

(c) 2002 jane chen

i really should scan in some more photos but since i'm selling my apartment and everything has been cleaned, i'm not sure where i stashed my box of goodies. this is, of course, a lucky jeans store sign. it was taken inside the desert passage, an indoor themed mall attached to the new aladdin hotel and casino.

one last picture of rosecliff, this one of the mansion itself. it was modeled after the grand trianon, a chateau on the grounds of versailles.

here is tenno looking out over the back of rosecliff. below and beyond the railing is cliff walk, a very picturesque path that follows the coast along the backside of many of the bellevue avenue newport mansions.

6:45 pm - get as close as you dare and then get closer

(c) 2002 jane chen

in honor of my new camera and new macro lens, i thought i'd post this pic - taken with an old camera and a non-macro lens. this shot was taken at rosecliff in newport, rhode island. tenno and i were married at rosecliff on july 14, 2001. this pic was taken about a year later when we went back to visit. for those of you who don't know rosecliff, it is one of the newport preservation society mansions that has been featured in a number of cinematic masterpieces including amistad, the great gatsby, and true lies.

3:46 pm - newport

(c) 2002 jane chen

rachel and i visited newport last year on the oregon coast. it actually reminded me a lot of the northeast coast (cape cod, parts of connecticut). we went on a whale watching tour with no whales but numerous sealions - a few of which can be seen in the background. the image above is cropped.

(c) 2002 jane chen

this is multnomah falls in oregon. i love portland, i really do. i'm also quite fond of seattle and vancouver, canada. there is something breathtaking about the pacific northwest. cities with vegetation is already a big deal to an east coaster like me. can you imagine mountains, wilderness, and volcanoes as well?

7:24 pm - welcome to hollywood

(c) 2003 jane chen

last of the b&w photo class pics for now. this structure starts the hollywood walk of fame on hollywood blvd. it also happens to be the first b&w print i ever made. come to think of it, it may be the first black and white photo i've ever taken.

11:11 am - puddle of love

(c) 2003 jane chen

this shot was taken under the scaffolding in front of the new bloomberg building in midtown. when i first moved into the neighborhood there was an abandoned furniture warehouse on the site. hard to imagine that just 5 years later (as we are about to move) a steel and glass skyscraper complete with luxury apartments and an h&m would rise from the same spot.

2:04 pm - look ma! no hands!

(c) 2003 jane chen

actually, no viewfinder used on this shot. it was a photo class assignment to take 2 rolls of film by literally pointing and shooting without composing through the viewfinder. a good exercise in stealth photography. also pretty good for practicing judging focal distances.

4:00 pm - agnus dei

(c) 2003 jane chen

this was taken inside st. patrick's cathedral in new york. i had just gotten my gossen luna pro meter and was having a blast metering everything. this shot was taken with metering off the gossen, not the camera. i want to go back to st. patrick's but with a tripod next time so i can get better depth of field.

11:58 pm - chinatown

(c) 2003 jane chen

i spent the good part of today touring chinatown so i thought i'd put up this shot. it was taken outside the golden unicorn restaurant a few months ago while we were waiting for friends for dimsum. this was on the first roll of film i put through my contax g2. one of maybe 2 shots that i liked on the roll - probably because i was rushing a roll through to test the camera before my alaska trip.

8:10 pm - parlez-vous francais?

(c) 2001 jane chen

last of the honeymoon pics for now. this was taken in nice, france. we had taken a half-day trip from monaco. the only other time i had been in nice was a family trip we took when i was 14. not much has changed. except i can't speak french anymore.
